I know it sounds crazy, but there are few things as exhilarating as getting a “tap.”
You’ve exhibited your dominance over another man. Both physically and intellectually. You’ve made that man submit to your superiority. And while, yes, we disguise it in a game, it’s still an exhibition of man vs. man. It’s still an exhibition of who is the top dog. I practice injury and death moves on you and we agree before hand that the “tap” signifies that I’ve put you in a position of severe injury or death. You’re accepting my dominance. It’s a beautiful game we play. \
So, on one end, martial arts has really taught me a ton about humility (because I get tapped a lot), and on the other end, there is still a thrill about getting a tap that expresses something. I’m a survivor. I’m a fighter. I worked hard. I got my reward.
I know most folks wouldn’t understand. But it’s as addictive as drugs.
