Nice little sweep. Looking forward to trying this out.

Yo, I never knew Judo was this gangsta. Geez. I’ll def be watching the next summer Olympics. If the UFC was smart, they’d have a scout checking them out.  They’re legit fighters.

My introduction to grappling arts was wrestling through my uncle who wrestled in middle and high school.

Then I learned about the effectiveness of Gracie Jiu Jitsu through Royce Gracie after watching UFC 4, then renting each UFC for the next month until I was convinced. Grappling is superior to striking (if the striker doesn’t know grappling, of course).  I’m not a full blown Jiu Jitsu head. Open minded, but definitely all about Jiu Jitsu (grappling).

Then I learned about Sambo (which after the recent seminar, I realized Sambo is 100x more than just leg locks. It’s awesome material).

But it wasn’t until I started to train with Chris Herzog (look him up) that i realized the effectiveness of Judo. YES JUDO.  Wait, so a martial art that was made into an olympic sport is actually deadly?  Man, you don’t even know. And while this video shows the beauty of Judo on the mats, just imagine being thrown like that on concrete in real life. Yeah. This stuff is no joke.  Not to mention, the Newaza part of Judo is basically quick attack grappling.  My coach teaches us Judo stuff and I’m like, wait, so you mean Judo had this years before BJJ had this?  (Mind blown) Inverted triangles. Flying armbars. Judo “been had.”

I mean, I knew guys like Judo Gene Lebell are legends. And Karo Parisyan used great Judo in real fights. And Ronda Rousey, one of my favorite fighters, is an Olympic Judo competitor and wins comps just off Judo tech.  I just didn’t know how beautiful it was until recently.  Man, I’ve been missing out. And it sucks because Coach has temporarily halted Judo and Sambo from our schedule since most guys are into no gi BJJ.  But I think, if our guys were exposed to the beauty of Judo and Sambo, they’d change their minds.

Ummmmmmmmmmmm. Wow. This is extremely impressive.  Talk about girl power. LOL.

LOL I actually had to use this today. I’ve worn a gi one time in my life and I had no idea how to tie my belt. I wasn’t trying to get clowned by the sambo teacher today. Putting this out here cuz a few people might benefit from this tutorial.  Now go hit those mats!

BJJ day 19…a little MMA.

I forgot to post on Thursday.  I missed almost 2 weeks of class due to what I thought was ringworm. Turns out it was just psoriasis. Either way coach told me to just get some tights and I’m clear to roll again.

So I got on the mats. The head coach wasn’t there.  Instead the owner took over class.  He’s more into how BJJ works for MMA because he’s an MMA guy.  Prior to our gym being a 10th planet affiliate, the grappling emphasized a lot of Sambo and Judo.  So we worked on some mount/spiderweb/cobra stuff.  The teacher wasn’t too familiar with all the names for stuff, but he knows his stuff so he’d just show us the positions.

Started from mount. Some good positional control.  He didn’t have a name for it, but I think my coach calls it cobra control. Here’s a pic (coincidentally, this is from last night’s event).

So he’s like, yeah, I know you guys do grappling only, but for self defense, it’s good to know.  Plus, the sambo variation is 10x more controlling than what you see in the pic.

From there he showed us a couple chokes. He showed us an arm bar set up.  He showed us a few grip breaks to finish the armbar if the guy’s defending.  Lots of sambo stuff.  Showed us a cobra choke

Then he shows a choke variation where you use your knuckles and you can actually dislocate a person’s jaw with enough pressure. LOL. He’s like, don’t use this in competition. Only in MMA or in self defense.  LOL.   He said it was a little Gene LeBell trick.  Makes sense. That dude, for being a personable guy, had a really savage style of grappling.

At the end we played a “game.”  2 on one.  The first one, I had to defend the choke, and if I start getting choked, I have to hold on and let my team mate break the choker’s grip.  My RNC defense is pretty good as long as I’m not on my stomach.  Coach had to remind me that I’m defending, not escaping.  That was fun.  Then we did another game where I had two guys holding me down in side control. By then I was gassed though. I was shrimping really well until I just had no more in the tank.  All in all, it was a productive class.

BJJ day 11…More Judo

I have a bad memory. So I don’t remember every throw I’m learning by name. But it’s fun stuff.  Getting the feel for this stuff I can see how it would be effective in competition.  I’m used to wrestling takedowns.  Judo takedowns feel soooooo much different.  Wrestling takedowns feel more like you’re being muscled to the ground. It feels like power.  Judo takedowns make me feel like I’m a feather.  It was wild. One of my partners was a kid who was about 140lbs. I’m about 235lbs.  I’m thinking, OK, I gotta help this kid. Nope. With the technique done right, you’re flying.

I also remember my intro class.  My coach Sarkis told me about my side breakfalls: “David, one day you’re gonna do this break fall wrong. On this day you’re going to remember that I told you this.  The reason you’ll remember this is because you will crush your boys. At that moment you will remember my face.”  LOL.  Well, yeah, I remembered his face.  I also busted my knee. Ha.  Such is life. I got my break fall right after that.

Still love it. Learning quickly. My body’s getting used to the bruising. They’re not even showing anymore.  My lower back hurts every time I’m done, but during the day my back is fine. Biofreeze is my friend.  Life is good. :)
